Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is a specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders.
London Lauriston Clinic’s experienced team of specialist ophthalmologists treats an extensive range of medical and surgical eye conditions within the following sub-specialties:
Diagnostic tests available at LLC include:
- Visual Field
- Ocular Biometry
- Autorefraction
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Visual Field — the visual field test detects dysfunction in central and peripheral vision, which may be caused by various medical conditions such as glaucoma. The test takes 15-30 minutes and involves the patient fixing their gaze and then indicating whether they have seen a small light by pushing a button.
Optical Biometry — this is a highly accurate non-invasive automated method for measuring the anatomical characteristics of the eye, such as the corneal power and length of the eye. Accurate measurements are critical for determining the correct power of a lens before it is implanted during cataract surgery.
Autorefraction — the autorefraction test measures a person’s prescription for glasses and refractive error at a click of a button.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) — an OCT scan is a non-invasive imaging test, much like a photograph, which provides the specialist ophthalmologist with a high resolution, cross-sectional 3D image of the ocular tissues at the back of the eyes. This sophisticated test scans and assesses eye health, and manages eye conditions, including macular degeneration and glaucoma.
Treatments available at LLC include:
- Lasers
- Intravitreous Injections
- Minor Ophthalmic Procedures
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) — this laser procedure treats glaucoma by safely and effectively reducing intraocular pressure in the eye.
Laser Photocoagulation — this laser procedure cauterizes blood vessels in the eye to stabilise or improve vision in conditions including diabetic retinopathy and age macular degeneration.
YAG Laser Capsulotomy — a laser procedure that is used after cataract surgery to improve vision that has become cloudy postoperatively.
Intravitreous Injections — this treatment involves having an injection into the eye, including anti-VEGF and anti-inflammatory drugs, to treat certain retinal conditions that cause abnormal blood vessels to grow and leak under the retina.
Minor Ophthalmic Procedures — surgical procedures using local anaesthetics, including excision of lesions, chalazion surgery, and punctoplasty, are performed in our cleanroom.
